Critical to the process of developing a sense of belonging to a global society is first establishing an awareness of and a responsibility to one's local and regional base. The need for this viewpoint becomes all the more important as technology unites us evermore into a single virtual community. This is particularly true for children whose lives are defined by poverty and as a result may have had fewer opportunities to broaden their perceptions of the world. In the face of this it becomes increasingly important to cultivate avenues that encourage them to overcome distance, language and culture to gain better insight and understanding of themselves and others.
My City, My World is a six -eight week inter-cultural program designed to partner groups of young people living in diverse cultural environments in an interactive project that will draw from their concepts of community while providing a vehicle to explore beyond the familiar boundaries of their neighborhoods by sharing their exploration, through new media, with their peers thousands of miles away
Participants are guided through both real and virtual studies of their own and each others communities examining the people, environment, customs and celebrations, as well as their challenges. They look at the development and growth of their communities; learn of the variety of people and enterprise that make their cities work, while gaining a new perspective and a heightened understanding.
Students will generate lists of places, people and events around their community as a data base from which to develop a profile of their subject. They will be assisted in planning field trips, arranging interviews and identifying a variety of activities reflecting life in their city. Through a selected series of assignments students will be immerse in structured activities geared toward the development of life skills as well as photographic ability.

In the development of these programs My City, My World has conducted cultural studies of Africa’s many influences on daily living throughout the diaspora. As facilitator for the My City, My World programs I draw from my experience while on assignment in places like Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Trinidad/Tobago, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and South Africa providing students the opportunity to benefit from valuable real life experiences and observations.
In addition to an increased knowledge of Internet technologies, students will learn to conceive, plan and execute a photographic study and gain information-gathering skills that will impact learning in other areas. Participants will look at life with a more discerning eye with an enhanced ability to view a variety of situations from several perspectives providing the potential for on-going and novel learning experiences.
